Who We Are
Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides educational and career services, job placement opportunities and post-employment support for people facing economic challenges, including people with disabilities and other disadvantages. Headquartered in Astoria, Queens, the community-based agency serves 164,000 persons annually. In 2009, Goodwill placed nearly 14,000 individuals in jobs and almost 64,000 over the last five years.
Recycling History
Goodwill is one of New York metropolitan area’s original recyclers since its founding in Brooklyn in 1915. Goodwill founders trained persons with disabilities and disadvantages to earned a living by collecting, mending, and selling donated clothes and household goods. In the twenty-first Century, Goodwill partners with nonprofit and for-profit organizations, government agencies and retailers on area recycling programs. These programs bring the “power of work” to our clients and help the communities we serve to become more environmentally-friendly. Goodwill’s Industrial Contracts Division recycles and reuses unwanted computer equipment through its Reconnect Program -- a free drop-off program created in partnership with Dell. Our 37 stores serve as e-waste drop-off centers. We also help keep plastic bags out of area landfills through BagSmart™.
Green Initiatives
Goodwill’s Bronx Back to Work Program serves people who are on and applying for public assistance, including homeless or under-domicile consumers (60%) and ex-offenders (65%). Bronx residents experience high poverty and unemployment rates, and many suffer asthma and other illnesses triggered by pollution. Goodwill based its Green Initiatives at the borough to offer job opportunities for unskilled Bronx workers. Goodwill’s Back to Work provides Green Maintenance training, and seeks to place participants in jobs that specialize in Brownfield Remediation, Food Justice, and prevention of Air Land & Water pollution.
